(RI §422717)

Comparative study on the federation and confederation projects of hispanic orb during the liberal triennium - Miguel Ángel Castro Vaquero

The transformation of the ancient Spanish empire into a constitutional state of bihemispheric dimensions, with the category elevation of the provinces from the former American colonies, did not prevent the emancipating process from continuing. The restructuring formulas of that territorial whole would not only have been convenient from an organizational point of view, but could have filled the longings of many Americans who saw its union with Spain, as established by the Constitution of 1812. The study of these projects, two confederal types and two other federal-cut autonomists, allow us to approach the proposals that were on the table to achieve a meeting point between two positions far away from each other, unity versus independence. The failure of these projects, which dynamited the unity of the Spanish nation under the narrow margins of the Constitutional Regime of Cadiz, was the prelude to what would soon happen. The opportunity to create a new model was missed, because it would have needed a new Constitution based on the uniqueness of the territories, but with common culture, language, and more than three centuries of common history, which could have continued to this day.
