El profesor Velarde realiza una documentada reflexión sobre los problemas que afectaban a la economía española de la época de Jovellanos, se detiene en el papel del carbón en el incipiente desarrollo industrial nacional, reafirma el papel de la educación en la economía, como elemento dinamizador de la investigación y la innovación, para concluir con una valoración acerca de la actualidad de las ideas económicas del ilustrado asturiano.
The author has made a documented reflection on the problems affecting the Spanish economy at the time of Jovellanos, he gives special attention to the role of coal in the emerging national industrial development, reaffirms the role of education in the economy as a stimulus to research and innovation, and concludes with an assessment of today validity of the economic ideas of the Asturian figure of the Enlightment.
