El inicio de negociaciones entre EE.UU. y Rusia para poner fin al conflicto de Ucrania, sin contar con el gobierno de Kiev ni de Bruselas, ha puesto a la Unión Europea ante el espejo de su irrelevancia internacional. La autoimagen de ser un influyente actor civil normativo se ha desvanecido. En el contexto de competencia geopolítica actual, los Estados europeos arrastran debilidades estructurales de difícil superación. Nos enfrentamos a una coyuntura decisiva donde la UE deberá reevaluar su tradicional alianza atlantista y redefinir su posición internacional en función de los valores que definen el proyecto europeísta, pero también de sus intereses colectivos. No se trata sólo de la defensa de la Unión, su propia pervivencia como proyecto político se encuentra amenazada. ¿Cómo sobrevivirá Europa a este reto geopolítico? Dependerá de nuestra capacidad de adaptación al nuevo entorno internacional.

The start of negotiations between the US and Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine, without the involvement of the governments in Kyiv or Brussels, has placed the European Union in the spotlight of its international irrelevance. Its self-image as an influential normative civil actor has vanished. In the current framework of geopolitical competition, European states suffer from structural weaknesses that are difficult to overcome. We are facing a decisive juncture where the EU must reevaluate its traditional Atlanticist alliance and redefine its international position based on the values that define the Europeanist project, but also on its collective interests. This is not just about defending the Union; its very survival as a political project is threatened. How will Europe survive this geopolitical challenge? It will depend on our ability to adapt to the new international environment.
