(RI §421693)

Obligations of responsible care of horses: An initial approach to the evaluation of the physical health and first aid for recreational and therapy horses - Carlota Álvarez González

This note has been designed with the intention of informing interested persons who live in contact with horses (owners or holders of horses or of farms and other equestrian centers, etc.) and who do not have veterinary knowledge, but whom the law holds responsible for the health and welfare of the horses, of their physical evaluation as well as of their care, of preventive medicine (in particular for horses used in equine therapies), of the most frequent emergencies and first aid. It focuses on recreational horses, including those used in equine therapy, but leaves competition horses aside given their need for more specialized care. It also disregards the evaluation of wild or feral horses and of farm working animals dedicated to agricultural production, transport, or to the production of horse meat. Having surveyed the minimal obligations that all horse owner or holder, or owner of the farmlands where the horses are located, should undertake regarding the health of the animal as part of their hygienic and caretaking responsibilities, the note then reviews basic aspects such as the evaluation of horses’ vital signs, weight and physical condition, other matters related to their health (dentition and the prevention of diseases), and the most common vital emergencies and how to handle them (colic, heatstroke or traumatism). It offers a final additional list of sources for readers without a professional background in the veterinary sciences (notwithstanding the interest that professionals in the field may also have in them).

Keywords: responsible care; recreational and therapy horse; physical evaluation; care; preventive medicine; emergencies and first aid.;
