(RI §421000)

Nietzsche and animals: beyond culture and nature - Virtudes Azpitarte García

Friedrich Nietzsche, the groundbreaking philosopher that marked the most radical turn in the history of philosophy, particularly regarding theory of knowledge, ethics, and aesthetics, is a pioneer of modern animal ethics. Following his original methodology, this article addresses an unknown aspect of his work. Through the empathy towards animality, the vindication of the body and the reaction against senseless animal suffering, the German author develops an anthropology of the oppression of what is defined as human and what is regarded as animal (be that our inner animal or the animals we prey on and annihilate). As the first great theorist of the philosophy of Otherness, he proposes a radical reversal of the self and the other, of the human and the animal, a revision of the basic foundations of these traditional concepts that belong to a philosophy trapped within religion and metaphysics. And it is also trapped within language: defining “the animal” and animality is the result of the search (and an invention of) the human animal. There are no discerning boundaries. There are no bridges, either. There is only the abyss created by the subject of knowledge, a pit deepened by the philosophy of the self, morals, religion and science. Nietzsche’s thought can neither be classified, nor systematized; guides and paths are absent; it is progressive thinking, appropriate for the change in human-animal relations that we seek today. The human animal is not essentially different from his animal other because fundamental essences do not exist. There are no concepts, no being in itself, no categories, and no handholds to clasp traditional metaphysics with. The author concludes that future animal justice and law should be based on such ex novo paradigms, premises and principles.

Keywords: Nietzsche; Otherness; wall; the fantastic animal; the animal with red cheeks; justice.;
