En el presente estudio se pretende, a partir del concepto de confesión religiosa, reconstruir la evolución social que han experimentado en el ámbito europeo los distintos cultos. Todo ello al objeto de evaluar el nivel de garantía de la libertad religiosa y de conciencia que puede alcanzarse en el espacio europeo, teniendo en cuenta que tanto la laicidad como la tolerancia se han convertido en importantes instrumentos de gobernanza.

The present study aims, starting from the concept of religion, rebuild social developments that the various cults have experienced at the European level. The purpose is to assess the level of guarantee of religious freedom and conscience that can be achieved in the European area, taking into account that both secularism and tolerance have become important instruments of governance.
