An unfailingly certain fate: Men face his own death with modern Spain - Soledad Gómez Navarro

Desde el prisma de la muerte como representación cultural, esta colaboración plantea sustancialmente una reflexión sobre la visión de lo ultraterreno contenida en los instrumentos notariales de última voluntad de la España Moderna, el análisis de su concepción de la muerte, el sistema elaborado, integrado y global de muerte y de representación del más allá que aquellos expresan y vehiculan, desde antes del óbito y hasta después de éste, desde la invocación hasta el escatocolo; así como los rasgos que la conforman. Una atención indispensable al marco conceptual e historiográfico, y el análisis de la posición de España en el controvertido tema del posible cambio en las actitudes ante la muerte al fin de la Modernidad, partiendo precisamente del documento de última voluntad, completan esta contribución, que se cierra con la doble constatación de que el documento de última voluntad es un camino útil para conocer la muerte del Antiguo Régimen, pero no el único, y que ofrece una representación específica de la muerte, pero tampoco la única.

From the perspective of death as cultural representation this paper studies the vision of the spiritual world as it is contained in the last will notarial documents in modern Spain, analyzing their conception of death, the elaborated global and integrated system contained in these documents and the representation of the transcendental world that they express and direct, from the steps previous to the coming of the death to those written once the person has departed, from the invocation to the escatocolo or final protocol; at the same time I analyze the main features that define these documents. An unavoidable attention has been paid to the conceptual and historiographic frame, and to analyze the role of Spain within the controversial topic of a possible change in the attitudes toward death within the historical frame of the end of Modernity. This analysis has been carried on from the study of the last will document. I have finished my paper with the double conclusion that the last will document is an useful way to know the death of the Old Regime, but it is not the only one, at the same time it offers an specific representation of the death, but this representation is not exclusive either.
