In this paper we offer new evidences of how did dr. Maurenbrecher research in Simancas for one year (1862-1863), and how did the documents he read changed his points of view about the European religious history. Using just a few of those documents concerning the year 1566, we explore what was happening in the Empire in that year, and how Chantonay, Philip II Ambassador, was relating to his king all the troubles that were surviving even after Trent’s Council closure. We join to new lines of historiography: the history of the Archives’ archives.
