Con una visión crítica, se describen los antecedentes de la actual crisis económica en la búsqueda de sus causas más profundas, al margen del detonante inmediato de la burbuja inmobiliaria que explotó en Estados Unidos en el verano de 2007. Un análisis teórico de las crisis económicas de los últimos años, desvela su naturaleza cíclica, pero también permite detectar las particularidades de cada una de ellas, condicionadas en gran parte por las medidas adoptadas para superarlas. Desde esta concepción, se revisan los principales indicadores socioeconómicos del grupo de países más vulnerables de la Unión Europea frente a los países que han liderado las directrices políticas marcadas por las instituciones europeas para afrontar esta crisis, centrando dicha revisión en los desequilibrios particulares que en cada uno de los países han agudizado sus efectos, obstaculizando una más rápida recuperación. Se hace una especial referencia a España, como uno de los países de la periferia europea, profundizando en los aspectos particulares de su realidad pasada y presente en relación con las crisis más recientes.

With a critical eye, the background of the current economic crisis is described to find its root causes, outside the immediate trigger of the housing bubble that exploded in the U.S. in the summer of 2007. A theoretical analysis of economic crises in recent years, unveiled its cyclical nature, but also detect the particularities of each crisis, conditioned largely by the measures taken to overcome them. From this view, the main economic indicators of the group of most vulnerable countries of the European Union are reviewed against countries that have led the policy guidelines set by the European institutions to address this crisis, the review focused on the individual imbalances in each one of the countries have intensified their effects, hampering a quicker recovery. In this article we make a special reference to Spain, as one of the countries of the European periphery delving into the particulars of his past and present in relation to the recent crises reality.
