Military health services: an humanitarian response during the First World War - M. Pilar Munuera Gómez y Juan Carlos Hernández Navarro

Se presentan algunos retazos de la Historia de la actividades humanitarias y sanitarias relacionadas con la Sanidad Militar que durante más de cinco siglos ha contribuido a muchos de los adelantos de la medicina universal. Las contiendas bélicas han propiciado novedades y descubrimientos en las técnicas de tratamiento que se han incorporado a la práctica establecida. Estos avances han sido llevados a cabo por profesionales que generalmente han pasado desapercibidos y solo unos pocos se han hecho un hueco en la historia por la relevancia de sus aportaciones. La labor ha sido desarrollada de forma discreta en circunstancias muchas veces impregnadas de heroicidad, en la ayuda al herido y enfermo en situaciones de precariedad de medios, en el peor de los contextos posibles: guerras y catástrofes naturales y humanitarias. En un contexto donde lo que importa es el auxilio en la recogida de la baja en el terreno y el tratamiento adecuado a las circunstancias. En la guerra procurando que el soldado se sienta protegido, tratando de acercar todos los adelantos que ofrecen las diversas especialidades de la Asistencia Sanitaria (Medicina, Enfermería, Farmacia, Veterinaria, Psicología) a la zona de operaciones. Es un continuo esfuerzo por adaptar al terreno todas las posibilidades de asistencia. Función compartida e interiorizada por todo el personal, mandos y tropa, que integran las diversas vertientes de la asistencia, en los distintos escalones. Supone un esfuerzo continuo de formación, en la que se hacen indispensables no solo conocimientos técnicos facultativos sino esfuerzo y preparación física. La moral del soldado se alimenta en gran parte por la capacidad de ese auxilio sanitario. En misiones humanitarias la Sanidad Militar se brinda como un cuerpo especializado y técnico que da respuesta eficaz y de calidad para atender de forma organizada a la población afectada por los desastres naturales con todos sus medios.

Some of the pieces of the History of the humanitarian and provision of health services related to Military Health System that have contributed to achieve many of the breakthroughs of universal medicine over more than five centuries, are introduced herein. War battles have fostered novelties and discoveries on the treatment techniques that have been incorporated to the established practice. Such breakthroughs have been carried out by professionals who generally have passed unnoticed and only a few have got a place f their own in History thanks to the relevance of their contributions. The work has been developed in a discreet way in circumstances which often were imbued by heroism, when helping the wounded and the ill in situations of scarcity of resources, in the worst of the possible contexts: war and natural and humanitarian catastrophes. In an environment where what matters is the assistance provided when collecting the casualties on the battlefield and the appropriate treatment for the circumstances. At war trying to make the soldier feel protected, attempting to assure every advance that the different specialties in Health Assistance (Medicine, Nursing, Chemistry, Vet, Psychology) may offer to the zone where the operations are being executed. It becomes a continuous effort to adapt to the field every likable possibility of assistance. A function is shared and embraced by all the personnel, command and soldiery, which are part of the diverse aspects of the assistance inside the different stages. It becomes a continuous effort of self-formation, in which not only technical-physician knowledge is essential, but also sacrifice and physical training as well. A soldier’s morale feeds itself mainly from the ability to provide health assistance. In humanitarian missions Military Health Services are provided as a specialized and technical assembly in order to give an effective and quality response so that the population affected by natural disasters can be attended in an organized manner making use of all their means.
