El autor analiza la noción de laicidad, en sus diversas significaciones, y su relación con el concepto de secularización en el contexto europeo, para desde ahí plantear algunas cuestiones en relación con la función de la religión en la configuración del espacio público y en relación con los poderes del Estado en este ámbito. El texto recoge la conferencia pronunciada por el autor en Roma, el 12 de febrero de 2010, en la ceremonia de entrega del Premio Arturo Carlo Jemolo, concedido en 2009 al Prof. Rafael Palomino Lozano, de la Universidad Complutense.

The author analyzes the notion of “laïcité”, in its diverse meanings, and its relation with the concept of secularization within the European context. From there, he poses some questions with respect to the role of religion in the configuration of the public space and to the State powers in this area. The text is based on the lecture delivered by the author in Rome, the 12th of February of 2010, in the ceremony of the Arturo Carlo Jemolo Prize, awarded in 2009 to Professor Rafael Palomino, from Complutense University.
